Tinted windows spur New Jersey traffic stop; 2 face drug charges

A New Jersey driver is facing serious drug charges after being stopped in traffic by police. The traffic stop was conducted after the officer noted that the vehicle had illegally tinted windows. The 19-year-old driver and his 20-year-old passenger both are now facing drug charges after police say they detected a marijuana odor coming from the vehicle.

Police assert that the officer detected the odor when the driver lowered his window. Police also report that the driver was asked to complete field sobriety tests and failed them. Following the field sobriety tests, the officer asked the driver if there was marijuana in the vehicle. The driver was said to have opened the trunk and retrieved a plastic bag containing marijuana, which was concealed inside coffee grounds.

The driver purportedly stated that he was "fronted" the marijuana. He was arrested and has since posted bail for release until he appears in court. The criminal allegations against this young man are significant. He is facing allegations of possession, intent to distribute charges, DUI, improper safety glass and other charges. All of these charges would follow the young man for his entire life if he is convicted.

The passenger is facing a charge of being under the influence of marijuana. He was also released from custody and scheduled to appear before a criminal court.

When police in New Jersey conduct a traffic stop, there are certain rules and regulations that must be adhered to. For individuals charged with a crime following a traffic stop, the adherence of police to these rules may be a subject of inquiry for a defense. Though the young man faces numerous drug-related, he, like everyone accused of s crime, will have the right to defend himself in court. There are inevitably two sides to every story, and both have yet to be heard in this case.
