New Jersey woman charged with drunk driving, child in car

Whenever people in a shopping plaza observe something out of sorts or a motorist that they think is not fully in control of a vehicle, it is not unusual for those observers to alert the police. Recently, shoppers in New Jersey did just that. They reportedly saw a woman who had apparently lost control of the vehicle she was operating. There was also a child in the car, and the woman is now facing charges that include drunk driving.

The 26-year-old driver was in a car when she allegedly hit a curb. According to onlookers, she then went across a lane and hit a support column. Thereafter, she proceeded to back up and hit a parked car. The incident ended with her hitting the support column again as she attempted to drive forward.

She had a 2-year-old child in the car, who was in the backseat. Police say there were also empty heroin packets in the vehicle. The woman was charged with DWI, reckless driving, driving while licensed suspended and also drug paraphernalia possession. She was taken to the hospital for treatment of the injuries she sustained.

Drunk driving and drug charges can be difficult for anyone to navigate. In New Jersey and other states, when a minor is in the car and drunk driving is alleged, the possible penalties for a conviction increase. Anyone facing drunk driving charges in New Jersey should be aware of how circumstances, such as the presence of a minor or drugs, can impact the charges. They may also benefit by understanding their rights as they prepare to defend themselves against the charges.
