Seventeen drug arrests made in a New Jersey borough

Recently in Pitman, New Jersey, 17 individuals were arrested and charged with drug crimes. The arrests were part of an effort conducted by the Pitman Police Department that was specifically aimed at rounding up suspected drug offenders.

The effort took place over seven days and netted individuals accused of a variety of drug-related offenses. Among those arrested was an individual who was believed to be selling heroin and another who was suspected of dealing heroin. The police also issued heroin and marijuana-related charges to other suspects.

The police chief stated that fighting drug crimes was a department priority. There had been discussions dating back to 2013 regarding how to best address heroin use in the borough. The police and some residents of the borough were in disagreement regarding the manner in which the issue was being handled. This resulted in the police issuing a warning to residents urging them not to engage in acts of vigilantism.

When law enforcement officials are being pressured by a community to crack down on drug crimes, it is possible that overzealous measures may be employed on behalf of the police. This could lead to officers violating a suspect's constitutional rights when attempting to make an arrest. Such violations could come as the result of an illegal search and seizure or another such misstep.

If you should ever be arrested and charged with a drug crime, getting an experienced New Jersey criminal defense attorney could prove critical. An attorney could carefully go over the record of your arrest to determine if your rights were violated. Depending on the circumstances of your situation, you may be able to have the charges dropped. If this does not appear likely, the attorney could help work a plea bargain to lessen the severity of the penalties.
