In a recent New Jersey case, a 29-year-old man was arrested and charged with sexual assaulting a 10-year-old girl. The exact details are unclear, and police have acknowledged that they do not know the time period when the purported sex crimes took place. Authorities revealed only that the incident or incidents took place in Princeton Township in a private residence, and that the man and the girl are not related.

A complaint was made to the police by one of the parents, and the man was brought in for questioning within 24 hours. At the time, however, his address was listed as unknown. No details about the police interview were divulged, and the man was placed under arrest after the interview.

The man was charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a minor. Bail information was not immediately available, though police indicated they were reviewing the man’s immigration status. Authorities believe this is the man’s first arrest for this type of offense, and they do not have any reason to believe there are other victims.

A criminal charge of sexual assault can be life-changing. The accused individual should prepare him or herself to defend against allegations that could result in a substantial prison term, branding as a sexual predator and possible immigration problems as well.

Because there is so little information available to the public, it seems as though there was little information gleaned from the police interview. The man would do well to consult a criminal defense attorney who is experienced in helping those accused of sex offenses.

The specifics of the parent’s complaint as well as any statements made by the person accused must be reviewed and investigated to ensure the protection of all legal rights and to prepare a defense seeking a fair and equitable conclusion.
