A devastating crash claimed the life of a woman crossing the street on her way to a local drug store. The accident happened on Sept. 22, 2017, at about 8:15 p.m. at the intersection of Ocean Boulevard and Broadway in New Jersey. Police did not indicate whether speed was a factor in the crash. Allegedly, charges of drunk driving, as well as reckless and careless driving, are being filed against the driver.
Supposedly, the driver is a Long Branch police officer and was named “Cop of the Month” in Feb. 2015. Authorities allege that the officer was driving while intoxicated when the women walked out in front of him. He claims the woman was jaywalking and that he had a green light. The responding officer’s dashboard camera video shows him recounting this information. No toxicology results are available.
To avoid conflict of interest, the case has been moved to Middlesex County because the officer is part of an ongoing investigation team in Monmouth County. There is no report on his employment status, but the department stated that discussions were ongoing and that they may decide as early as next week. As of Thursday, the only charge that had been filed was driving while intoxicated.
Although an investigation into the accident is continuing, a person has died as the result of what is presumably another person’s drunk driving. In New Jersey, those facing charges such as this may want to consult with an astute criminal attorney. An insightful lawyer will aggressively prepare a defense to achieve the best possible outcome for a client’s case.
